You need to ensure you have plenty of room in your laundry room, cupboard or kitchen for your washing machine to fit physically, and that it has a large enough capacity for your family's needs. Get the measurements wrong, and you could end up with a washing machine that is too big for your space or has the door swinging the wrong way – and no one wants that headache!

Are all washing machines the same size?

Most washing machines come in standard height and width measurements to ensure they fit underneath a standard countertop in the UK. However, the depth of your washing machine can vary slightly depending on the drum size, with larger-capacity washing machines having a larger depth.

What are the dimensions of a washing machine?

A washing machine's standard height and width dimensions are H85cm x W60cm. The depth of your washing machine can vary slightly depending on the drum size. Usually, a washing machine's depth sits between 53-67cm, but it can be larger or smaller depending on the model.

Washing machine height:

• Around 85cm

A standard front-loading washing machine is 85cm high. This allows the washing machine to sit comfortably underneath a countertop while providing a decent-sized drum capacity.

Washing machine width:

• Around 60cm

A standard washing machine is 60cm wide. However, some brands may have slimmer models available for smaller spaces.  

Washing machine depth:

• Between 53-67cm

The depth is often the most variable dimension on a washing machine – larger capacity drums usually have a bigger depth. At Hoover, the washing machine with the smallest depth is 53cm (for 8 kg capacity), while the largest is 67cm (for 12 kg capacity).

How to measure dimensions for a washing machine

The first step in choosing the right size washing machine for you is carefully measuring the space where you intend to keep it. You'll need to take a few key measurements to ensure your new appliance fits correctly. Measure:

• Height: Measure from the floor to the ceiling, or to the lowest restriction point. Take into account any overhead cabinets, sloped alcoves or obstructions.
• Width: Measure the total width of the space in which the washing machine will be fitted. Take into account any obstacles, such as cabinets or protruding walls/alcoves.
• Depth: Measure from the back wall of your chosen space to the front edge of any adjacent cabinets or the door, if you'll be storing your washing machine in a cupboard. You should allow up to 7cm at the back of your machine to account for pipes.

What else is there to consider with washing machine sizes?

Once you have the initial measurements of your space, account for a little extra space for ventilation around the machine. Between 5-10cm of clearance at the side and back of the machine is ideal for air circulation. You should ensure there is room to the front and side of the machine to account for door clearance, allowing you to access the drum easily.

It's also a good idea to take into account the delivery of your new washing machine. Consider the route into your home and any potential obstacles, like tight hallways, doorways, stairs or lifts.
